postheadericon Humans have the need to read | Gail Rebuck

does not matter if the books are delivered in print or smart phone, the main thing is to get lost in reading

why we bothered to read a book? Children say from time to time. Many of the 12 million adults in Britain with reading difficulties were repeated every day. But for the first time in 500 years since Johannes Gutenberg democratized reading, many of our education classes are also wondering why in a world of technology is accelerating, increasing poverty and decreasing time care, case of shipwreck invest valuable time in a good book

The initial response is the same technology that has raised the issue. Psychologists at Washington University used brain scans to see what happens in our heads when we read the stories. They found that "readers mentally simulate each new situation is reflected in a story." The brain weaves these situations as well as his own life experiences to create a new synthesis of mind. Read a book leaves us with new connections neuron.

The discovery that our brains are physically changed by the experience of reading is something that many of us understand by instinct, we think of how an extraordinary book, had a transformative effect on the way I looked at the world. This transformation occurs only when we get lost in a book, the failure to maintain mental and emotional real world. That's why studies have found that kind of deep reading that makes us more empathetic, or as Nicholas Carr says in his essay, The dreams of readers, "more attentive to the inner life of others."

If the reading is significantly reduced, it would change the very nature of our species. If we in the future, are not wired for solitary reflection and creative thinking that will be reduced. However, as a reader and editor, I am optimistic. Technology provides many solutions as it does challenges for each door that closes, another opens. That the capacity offered by electronic devices such as readers, smartphones and tablets, to make a whole library in your hand is an incredible opportunity. As writers, we must use every new piece of technology to integrate reading long-term in our culture. We need to focus on the message, not to die in the middle. We must be platform-independent, but the evangelical content.

We must also improve the capacity utilization of the Internet to inform readers and potential readers, including extraordinary new books are published every year and renew his friendship with the most wealth British literary tradition. Research shows that if we read, we'll be different people: less complex, less empathetic, less interesting. It can hardly be a better reason to fight to protect the future of the book.
