Ask Jack: Setting up your new Win7 laptop
Richard Cowling is to get a new laptop for Christmas Windows 7 and want some advice about his creation, and this is the backup
Richard Cowling
It's a wonderful idea, but would need about five positions. However, the creation of a PC Windows 7 is the same as creating a XP machine. You still have to enter the date and time, create user accounts, run Windows Update, and so on. This is not funny So if you give a laptop for the non-geek, try to do all this in advance, so you can just open it and start using it. There is an argument to back up immediately, but I do not do it myself, and I suspect nobody else does. I prefer to go through the initial configuration, customization and installation of basic software, and then make an image-based backup. It is certainly worth to save the recovery partition, and laptops typically include a small utility that tells you to. However, the version of Windows on the recovery partition is out of date. If you have to use, you must do it all again. Once you've created an administrator account with a password, you are ready for action, which is my way of making people remember the next step: click on the globe ( ex Start button), type the word in the search box, and the Action Center to select the menu. That's two points. First, forget the idea of ??XP trying to remember where to find files and folders. Windows 7 operating system is driven by the quest to find things by typing a few letters into the search box or the help system or otherwise. Second, the Action Center is a small center starter for things like security settings, backup, problem reports and other information. Use the Centre to ensure that the firewall is running, the machine has a virus protection, network security settings are fine, and so on. When you are ready to make backups, you can do from the center of action, too.- The other word to enter is "red", which is the Network and Sharing Center. It has wizards for connecting to your home network, despite connect an Ethernet cable should work just fine. Anyway, get online and use Windows Update to download all the critical security patches, and also to install the browser IE9. (It is much better than Internet Explorer 8, HTML5 does not support enough for the web today.)
At some point, I also install most of the Windows Live Essentials 2011 full, if not pre-installed by the computer manufacturer. This includes Windows Messenger, Photo Gallery, Mail, Live Mesh, etc.. Many of these used to be part of Windows, meaning that rarely updated. Now they are available on the website, which can be updated each year and have improved considerably. (Windows Live Essentials 2011 does not work on Windows XP.)
suppression "bloatware" can be a tedious task, but the crowd SlimCleaner sources can help a lot. Click Uninstall and tell you what programs are installed, and how much they are appreciated by SlimCleaner community. SlimCleaner also uninstall the selected program. If you are not a program, click the More Info button to see how many people voted for or against maintaining, and reading your comments. The Optimize button displays the programs and services that are loaded when the computer starts, but not as powerful as the Task Manager AnVir no. SlimCleaner is one of the three Windows programs are now suggesting that settles in the world. The others are the Secunia Personal Software Inspector and all my applications (and I'm glad to see that all my applications has been added PSI). For "road warriors" AnchorFree Hotspot Shield might add, LogMeIn Free and monitoring program for phone / laptop Prey. If your laptop is stolen, the dam could help you recover.
