AUO Sipix e-paper staggers through video at 6 fps, could go as high as 16
We haven 't heard from the folks at IRX innovations in a while, but if the video is any indication, they haven' t given up on their e-reader still only dreams. An Internet video showing the torn outfit pressed a modest 6 fps from a AUO Sipix e-paper panel. The playback is choppy clearly, but say IRX engineers, they can be an extra 10 fps out of the device by a buffer memory contents eek. It \ s crazy-smooth 'sa far cry from Mirasol " 1080p color shows, or even Bookeen 's Anti-chromatic range - but we won' t complain if it can keep them cheap. Moreover, Chariots of Fire born to see in slow motion.
AUO Sipix e-paper reels through video at 6 fps could originally appeared as high as 16 on Engadget on Mon, June 20, 2011 01:04:00 EDT. Please read our terms for use of feeds.

How to Dual-Boot Into the Speedy Joli OS
After setting up your computer with Windows 7 is great. After setting up your computer dual-boot into Windows 7 and a fast thin client OS like Joli? It is even better.
Google's Chrome OS has gotten a lot of ink lately, and for good reason: It's easy to install, zippy, andinsofar as thin-client operating systems gopowerful. But as ubiquitous as Chrome is in the news these days, it isn't the only web-based operating system in town. Jolicloud, or as Jolicloud developers prefer to call it these days, Joli OS, has been making low-powered netbooks, PCs, tablets, and web browsers more productive since 2009.

Jolicloud, aka Joli OS is a free, cloud-based OS that allows you instant access to your favorite online applications and services workers.
Experienced users find the install supplement Joli OS as a secondary operating system, its existing installation of Windows 7 will opt to boot the thin client is so fast that they already logged in, fired from an e-mail, and moved with her life in the time it would take for Windows 7 to the boot screen to load. Setting up your PC to dual boot into Windows 7 and OS Joli could not be easier, with the whole process should not be longer than 45 minutes and a single download. Here's how it goes.
Step 1: Download Joli OS

If you plan to install OS Joli, you must first download it. The thin-client developers provide the operating system in a variety of flavors. The easiest way Joli (and we are for this tutorial), is to install the Windows option, prominently on the download page Jolicloud away (above) presents. Step 2: Install Joli OS
It's time to get that thin-client installation to show on the road. Double-click the OS installer Joli and tell Windows to retreat when it warns you that it does not recognize the packet publisher. After a few minutes to extract, is the package that will greet you with an installation dialogue.

By default, the installation package will want to set up shop on your C: drive. If you're OK with the location and partition size suggested, click Next. If they rub you the wrong way, click the option to change the configuration (above). Your PC can rock a Joli OS installation with as little as 4GB of space. Once you've wrangled the installation settings you're after, click Next. Joli OS will install to your system, prompting you to go for a coffee. If you choose to do so, you'd better make it a quick oneafter repeated installations, we've found the whole process to average less than five minutes in length.
Step 3: Reboot Your PC
Once installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart your system. Do this. Thanks to some behind-the-scenes magic and GNU project GRUB boot loader, you will find that you now rocking a dual-boot system that the OS-or Windows-Joli-7 asks you to boot into on startup. For the sake of this tutorial, you use your keyboard arrow keys Joli OS (see below) to select and press Enter.

Use a splash screen Joli OS will be rewarded, followed shortly thereafter by a dialogue and progress bar to explain that Joli is your OS installation is complete. In hindsight, we are sure that the Joli OS developers would agree that this is one way to go one better place and grab a cup of Java as a process to unpack. Is as svelte as an operating system Joli, the last stage of its installation, a surprisingly long time took to complete. That is, your patience will be rewarded with one of the best dual-boot thin client experiences currently available. Once installation is complete, Joli OS will automatically reboot your system to boot into the OS again, so that you can to the point.
Step 4: Set Up Joli OS
Whether you are a coffee break, or chose not, sooner or later your Joli OS installation is complete and ready for use. Remember, the credentials on the back we had to decide in step 2? It is their time to shine: When Joli OS has rebooted, type it into the box provided. You are then prompted to either log into your existing Jolicloud account or create one (below). For existing Jolicloud users, login to your Joli OS installations are connected to your account to one of the preferences, settings or documents that you created with other iterations Joli OS to your new Sync hardware-bound version of the OS system . For users who are new to Jolicloud Joli and OS, creating an account is not only a prerequisite for the thin-client rocks on your computer, but also a fantastic way to access all your personal information, documents and preferred applications, where you get there via the dedicated website Jolicloud, its own Chrome app thumbstick installations and hardware to the operating system.

You are then asked to describe what kind of hardware you have the operating system should be installed and your computer brand and model. This Joli OS helps you with the best in service and driver updates for your specific test. It could also come useful later, should you decide to use the operating system in several places and need to distinguish between those who is installing.
Step 5: Enjoy!
Now that you have installed your OS Joli thin client, you are ready to take advantage of what a dual-boot as super rig your offer now to reap. For heavier tasks, such as hardcore gamers, and photo-manipulation, there's no doubt that Windows 7 is the right platform for the job. If all you are interested in is a bit of word processing, surfing the Internet, or get your e-mail, see Joli OS more than capable. What is more, make Joli operating systems low power consumption it perfectly productive for sales representatives looking for a place on a cross-country flight with nothing more than the charge in your laptop battery, or for those of us not to wait, the patience, suitable boot our computer into a robust OS.

Step 6: Just In Case

Simply boot into Windows with an Administrator account, go to your Control Panel> Programs> Programs and Features> Uninstall. Search Jolicloud in the list of applications, and then uninstall it like nothing else. Boom: your system is back to a mono-boot animal.
Court Says EA Can Use The Word 'Dillinger;' Declares John Scalf's Trademark Claim Invalid
Quick refresher: EA 's Godfather Games provide machine guns after famous submachine gun enthusiast, named John Dillinger. Scalf took issue with the use of the famous last name, threatened litigation, unless EA promptly deposited millions of dollars on his account at the next UN robbed bank. EA as his "offering" shortly before filing a lawsuit of their own asking for permission Dillinger 's name to use in their games.
The results are (finally) and is in Scalf (rightly) on the losing side:
The court rejected the claim of public law, Concluded that the Indiana post-mortem right of publicity law is not retroactive and therefore not for Dillinger And that (to be read in light of the First Amendment) to "literary works" exception in the statute broadly enough to cover video games.
The court rejected claim the brand, noting that EA has protected the use of the name "Dillinger" by the First Amendment, because there is some relevance to the plot line had the game and not "intentionally misleading" about a possible endorsement by Dillinger, LLC .
It 'sa good start and perhaps a sign that Scalf' s coattails-riding days are over. The court 's declaration that Indiana' s unusual trademark isn 't should retroactively be sufficient to Scalf \ Kick' s controversial longings to the curb, and that seems really all he has to go for it. Of course, we have seen 've pop the legal doors on a few other players on the active closed (Right Haven, the Winklevii), open only to return moments later be found out. I think we 'll just wait and see.
Scalf can perhaps his dubious legacy by ensuring that Dillinger in his quote "business" slogan:
My friends wanted to firemen, farmers or policemen, are something. Not me, I just wanted to steal people 's money!
Synergy!

Julie Taymor Blames Twitter For Bad Reviews Of 'Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark'
Break their silence on "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," the Broadway musical from which it was released in March, Julie Taymor criticism implied her former producers on Saturday afternoon to audience focus groups said that the rise of Twitter and blogs for instant theater criticism shows damage ...Good, good. It turns out that not only Taymor is not very well judge the quality of this particular play, but it seems pretty ignorant about history. Clive Thompson reminds us that the audience in Shakespeare's time, didn 't quiet type their opinion about the games they see on the Internet, they were talking about him now:
"It's very scary when people go more to the to the audience telling you how to do a show," she said. "Shakespeare would have been horrified. Forget it. It would be impossible, this works because there is always something that people do not like to come."
[...]
"Twitter and Facebook and blogs just trump you," Ms. Taymor said during a moderated discussion at the annual meeting of the Theatre Communications Group, an umbrella organization of regional and nonprofit theaters. "It is very difficult to create. It is incredibly difficult to be in a shot glass and a microscope like that."
Shakespeare's audience was far more boisterous than are patrons of the theatre today. They were loud and hot-tempered and as interested in the happenings off stage as on. One of Shakespeare's contemporaries noted that "you will see such heaving and shoving, such itching and shouldering to sit by the women, such care for their garments that they be not trod on . . . such toying, such smiling, such winking, such manning them home ... that it is a right comedy to mark their behaviour" (Stephen Gosson, The School of Abuse, 1579). The nasty hecklers and gangs of riffraff would come from seedy parts in and around London like Tower-hill and Limehouse and Shakespeare made sure to point them out:In addition, Thompson also points out that the audience for theater in New York City haven 't always so nice and pointed at the famed Astor Place riots, as the anti-UK sentiment in New York City at the time caused audience members start to happen "loudly express their displeasure with boos and hisses" while Shakespeare 's play, which about a possible riots:These are the youths that thunder at a playhouse,
and fight bitten apples; that no audience but
the tribulation of Tower-hill or the limbs
Limehouse, their dear brothers, are able to endure.
(Henry VIII, 5.4.65-8)
It seems that some fans bitch about a crappy production, which seemed like a bad idea from the start seems pretty tame in comparison, Julie.

Crytek Officially Announces Crysis 2 DX11 Patch, Calls it a “Gift to the High-End Community”
Crysis 2 's quite a looker, but it certainly didn' t make your PC explode. Hell bet that we only caught on fire a little . And - given the original Crysis 'bleeding-edge legacy - we' d be lying if we say that wasn 'ta little disappointing. Crytek, but isn 't about to set us on high, dry and without a few spots of PC chips forever in our lungs. The developer still worried, and as proof that it 's drop a big fat DX11-shaped love letter to PC gamers' front door - absolutely free.
"Crysis 1 's intention was, if I should play it three years later, it looks good. And it does actually met, but know that it is difficult for entry-level players, \ made" Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told Gamasutra. "So with Crysis 2, we took a different direction, and it went back off a little."
"This is much more like a gift to the high-end community," said Yerli. "And I think players will appreciate. It lifts Crysis 2 and gives a taste of what PC gaming develop in the future, if you want to support a high-end preference."
So what 's on the menu? Well, 's posted a detailed list of changes, but here' Crytek \ s the essentials: full DirectX 11 support, tessellation and displacement mapping, HDR, Motion Blur, and many other such terms that believe in our stomachs, as they 're making full made perfect, complete with anti-aliasing butterflies.
The patch is set to drop next week, but PC Gamer's gotten its hands on some side-by-side comparison shots to ease the wait. To be completely honest, we don't see too terribly much of a difference except holy moley the bricks . We want to gently caress. With our faces.
But! In addition, our eyeballs remain resolute in our heads. Take a look for you, though. What do you think?
LaCie's CloudBox Combines Offline Storage with Online Backups
We 're constantly preach the importance of securing data as a preventative measure against Murphy' s Law. Hard disk drive failure, and while it never happened at an opportune time because backups there is the difference between shouting out a series of obscenities and a hole in the wall, and muttered a few curse words under your breath before moving on. LaCie wants to help you track this with the new CloudBox, a hybrid storage system, back up your files in two locations.
You plug it in, lifted him up and sit back as the CloudBox automatically shuttle data from your local hard disk in the cloud. In this way, even if a fire breaks out or ninjas come crashing through your home destroyed everything in the eyes, you 'll have an online copy of your backed up data.
"No other product in one step process for backing up your files in two locations offers, so you always get a second copy for the ultimate in data security," says LaCie. "Simply backup files from your PC or Mac computer with CloudBox -. Local Backup provides quick access to files and sends the recovery in the event of PC failure CloudBox then automatically copy your files to the cloud, every day - make sure that your data safe and accessible from anywhere. "
You don 't have to keep connected to the CloudBox to your PC, so if you' re rocking a laptop or backup data from multiple computers, you \ re free ', separate the CloudBox and it is still upload your files. And prying eyes from spying your documents, maintain the CloudBox features AES encryption.
Sounds like a solid idea to us, although the CloudBox is only available in 100GB capacity. That 's probably enough to hold all your important data, but far behind the fuse, only half the contents of your hard drive 2TB.
The CloudBox is for $ 200 and includes 1 year of on-line backups.

UK Rightsholders Want Web Censorship; Don't Want The Public To Be A Part Of The Conversation
"Confidential" documents that show this blog to the Premier League has joined a coalition of rights holders, including the Publishers Association, BPI, MPAA and other copyright lobbying hard for a great firewall of Britain. As Firth 's source notes, no matter where you stand on issues of copyright, it seems the notion that political decisions are involved behind closed doors without the public incredibly questionable, even if it' s quite common. We 've to think the same thing in the U.S., where politicians seem to see that the public isn' ta stakeholders, and that the Beneficiary of a law are the only players. In this case, makes matters worse is that representatives from the Open Rights Group asked not to attend the meeting and were rejected. The government has thus a Single "the rights of consumers 'representatives take part, by a group called Consumer Focus. We 've never seen. If the USTR was on ACTA work, it is shown very briefly, some consumer rights groups, a copy of a draft (to copy what they weren 't set out on notes or do anything with) and then claimed that they were fair so that all parties access. Of course they ignored that copyright maximalists were helping in the actual drafting and had full copies of the documents. But ... Details.
The group attempts to influence public policy with a desperate sounding confused and to serve in places private template for the internets Ed Vaizey, the proposal at a meeting of stakeholders (including ISPs) debated last Wednesday.
In the actual proposal for discussion: It would be a provision under which ISPs would "fast" access block certain websites owners have claimed violated, as if by a \ is reviewed at the speed with which the "expert board". Held little actual censorship would propose testing the sites in question because it hints to censor even the desire to sites that can stream live events. Due process? That 's for day laborers, apparently. And while the people there and again that this sort of thing would only hurt obvious sites are used, remember, it was only in recent days that we pointed out that owners claimed copyright, which obviously does not hurt sites like Archive.org, Vimeo and SoundCloud were pirate sites.
About the only good news at the beginning of the meeting is that the British government apparently wasn 't even in a part of this scheme, which is supposedly "on a voluntary basis." Interested
If another contact of mine inside government to be believed, Ed Vaizey said to have remarked, "if it 'sa voluntary scheme to go and do it." What Stark means that the government will not be involved. What 's really scary here, but how much is behind closed doors, done to create policies - whether "voluntarily" or the government - which heavily influence everyone and their rights to free speech. No matter what your opinion on the enforcement of copyright, is it really so crazy to think that these discussions and proposals should be done in the open, to get all Views heard?
