IBM Roadrunner retires from the supercomputer race
For all the money and effort poured into supercomputers, life can be brutally short. See IBM Roadrunner as a classic example: 116640 cluster-core record was only five years ago, yet already considered further in time the Los Alamos National Laboratory is underway on the action today. Do not cry too much for the legend only once, however. The mixture of Opteron and Cell processors is essential to understand the flow of energy in weapons, while promoting HIV studies, nanowires and the known universe. Roadrunner should be useful even in his last breaths, researchers have a month to experiment with routing data and system memory compression before being dismantled serious OS. It is true that the supercomputer was overshadowed by competitors cheaper, faster or green, including Cray renaissance nemesis - but there is no doubt that we have learned from Roadrunner brief moment of glory .
